What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood circulation against the walls of the arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to different parts of the body. The pressure of the blood varies according to the need of the body. When the blood pressure remains high over a long time then it is called high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Blood pressure can also remain very low due to some health conditions of the body. This condition is called hypo-tension.

High blood pressure makes the heart works too hard which increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, heart failure etc.

Blood pressure is measured in terms of systolic pressure (It is the highest pressure when the heart contracts) over diastolic pressure (lowest pressure when the heart relax).

Blood pressure is measured using a device called sphygmomanometer. A healthy blood pressure for adults is less than 120/80 mmHg (120 over 80). When the blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or above, then it is considered high blood pressure.

What are the Causes of High BP?

High blood pressure is a condition caused when the pressure of your blood is persistently very high. Blood pressure can develop over years. The exact causes of high blood pressure is not known in most of the cases. Some of the conditions that can develop high blood pressure include:

  • Kidney Problems
  • Certain Medications
  • Improper Diet
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid Problems etc. are some of the reasons behind high blood pressure.

Who is at Risk of Getting BP Problems?

Some of the risk factors that can cause blood pressure are:

  • Age – Blood pressure may increase as age increases and can lead to high blood pressure.
  • Excess consumption of alcohol
  • Overweight and Obesity
  • Lack of Exercise
  • Unhealthy Routine in Life
  • Smoking
  • High Stress
  • Excess intake of salt etc

What are the Symptoms of High Blood Pressure?

Usually for most of the people there is no symptom or sign for high blood pressure. But some people may have symptoms like:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Problems in Vision / Eyes
  • Respiratory Disorders etc.

What are the Preventive Measures to keep Blood Pressure Under Control?

There are many factors through which you can control high blood pressure. It includes:

  • Regular Exercise: Exercises or physical activities are good for heart.
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Reduce salt and excess fat in your diet.
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Bring changes in your lifestyle according to the advice of the doctor.
  • Quit smoking
  • Avoid the excess intake of alcohol
  • Have proper sleep
  • Manage stress

It is good to check your blood pressure in regular intervals to know if there is any serious variation.

What are the Treatment Options if you have High Blood Pressure?

If you have high blood pressure, consult your doctor and treat according to his recommendation. There are medications and drugs to treat hypertension or high blood pressure. Use the medications as your doctor prescribes. In addition to medicines, the above measures to keep blood pressure in control should also be followed as per the advice of the doctor.
