What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the pressure of blood circulation against the walls of the arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to different parts of the body. The pressure of the blood varies according to the need of the body. When the blood pressure remains high over a long time then it is called high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Blood pressure can also remain very low due to some health conditions of the body. This condition is called hypo-tension.
High blood pressure makes the heart works too hard which increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, heart failure etc.
Blood pressure is measured in terms of systolic pressure (It is the highest pressure when the heart contracts) over diastolic pressure (lowest pressure when the heart relax).
Blood pressure is measured using a device called sphygmomanometer. A healthy blood pressure for adults is less than 120/80 mmHg (120 over 80). When the blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or above, then it is considered high blood pressure.
