What is Chicken Pox?

Chicken is a common disease which can occur to mostly kids at any age. It normally occurs between the months of March till May. During this problem, the kids suffer from fever, headache, cold, cough along with some spotty and itchy rashes. These rashes are initially filled with liquid which later dries up and then goes away. It mostly happens for a period of week up till 10 days. It is important that the person with chicken pox is kept at home for this duration as this is a highly contagious disease and can spread to others. The most important thing to be considered during this period is that you don’t scratch your rashes as they can then leave mark for ever on your body.

Most of the countries give vaccination for chicken pox to kids, however, that does not mean that you won’t get chicken pox if exposed to its virus. If you have it as a kid, your body becomes immune to this virus and you getting it again as an adult becomes rare. However, you might still get it second time so it’s always better to avoid being in contact with a person with chicken pox.

Is Chicken Pox dangerous?

Chicken Pox is often not dangerous in kids. It can occur to them at any point of time. In case you feel that your child has severe symptoms of chicken pox and is not active or is getting the rashes in eyes, too many in mouth or inside their private areas, you should consult a doctor. It is also advisable to consult a doctor anyways if you think your kid has chicken pox. Doctors can suggest you medicine to keep the symptoms at minimal and confirm if it is chicken pox or something else. It is always better to be confirmed that you have chicken pox as a child else you can be at risk of getting it when grown up.

People with weak immune system can also get this even if they are an adult. Chicken pox to an adult can be more severe than in kids.

If you are pregnant, you should avoid being in contact with people with chicken pox. If you get chicken pox during your first trimester, it can lead to abnormality in your new born. If you get it during your third trimester, the risk is that your new born also gets it. Chicken pox in new born is life threatening. So, it’s better that you avoid it completely.

What are the symptoms of chicken pox?

You can consult a doctor if your find these things around you:

1- Headache
2- Fever
3- Spots / Blisters over your body
4- If you are aware that kids around your area / kids in your child’s school are getting it. You should be alerted.

What are the causes of chicken pox?

Chicken pox is a highly contagious disease which usually occurs through a virus known as varicella zoster virus (VZV). The common causes of chicken pox are:

1- If you are in contact with a person with chicken pox for more than 15 minutes, you are at risk of getting this disease.
2- You can get it through contaminated surfaces, objects like toys, bedding etc.
3- If you touch chicken pox rashes.
4- If the virus is spread around your area.
5- If you have not received it as a child, you are at risk.
6- If you are immunity is weak, you can get it.
7- If you are pregnant, your chances of getting it become higher if in contact with this virus.

What are the prevention measures of chicken pox?

Here are a few prevention measures of chicken pox:

1- Ensure that your kid if has chicken pox does not go to school until all the rashes have dried up and scrabbed.
2- If you have a weaker immune system, ensure that you are not in touch with people with chicken pox.
3- If somebody in the house have chicken pox and you cannot avoid being in contact with that person, ensure that you keep your house clean, washing all the toys regularly, changing the bed sheets regularly. Showing sun light to your house as it can kill the bacteria.
4- The person with chicken pox and people serving them should keep washing their hands regularly so that the infection is kept at the minimal.

What are the treatment options of chicken pox?

Chicken pox can usually be treated at home only. You can visit a doctor just to ensure that it is chicken pox. Your doctor can also suggest some medication to reduce the symptoms of this diseases. There are medicines in the market (which your doctor can refer) to reduce itching on your rashes. Lacto calamine should be applied on the rashes to overcome itching.

Use Paracetamol in case of fever. Avoid medicines like ibuprofen (pain killers) as they can worsen the case.

What are the precautions to be taken when you have chicken pox?

Here are a few precautions for the patients with chicken pox:

1- Chicken pox is very itchy. Avoid scratching the rashes. Instead use a cloth to pat them.
2- Wear gloves during the night to ensure that you do not scratch while sleeping.
3- Take cool or luke warm water bath.
4- Wear loose / cotton clothes. Your skin should breathe properly.
5- Do not comb the hair harshly, if you have these blisters in your head.
6- You can apply little coconut oil in your head to avoid itching there.
7- If you do not get proper creams or medicines to avoid itching, you can try coconut oil on your body too.
8- If you have blisters inside your mouth, you can eat sugar free ice candies / curd etc.
9- Drink a lot of fluids. Water is the best fluid to be taken at this time rather than other sugary drinks.
