Chikungunya: Symptoms, Causes, Prevention and Treatment

Chikungunya is an infectious condition which is caused by Chikungunya Virus. It is recently seen to be spreading all across Delhi. The city is facing this problem with the number of deaths rising high. Though the condition is not considered deadly, but if patients with any previous medical history gets this fever, it might trigger to serious conditions.

Here are a few things you should know about this illness.

What Causes Chikungunya?Chikungunya is caused by the virus transmitted in patients
by mosquito bite. The virus is passed to humans by two species of mosquito.
These mosquitos usually bite during day time. People who are at risk of getting
infected are new borns, small kids, adults or people with any previous medical
history like diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

Symptoms of Chikungunya

Be alert if you are facing any of the below symptoms:

1-      High Fever for more than 2 – 4 days

2-      Joint Pains

3-      Lack of Energy

4-      Headache, Muscle ache

5-      Swelling in Joints

6-      Body Rash

Prevention of Chikungunya

The major prevention one can follow is to avoid mosquitoes to grow. It is important that your surroundings are clean and healthy so that you do not face this issue. Here are a few prevention techniques which you should follow:

1-      Keep your house as well as surroundings clean. Clean places usually reduce the chances of mosquitoes.

2-      Ensure there is no stagnant water. Things which we normally miss include water coolers, flower pots, thrown away tyres, buckets etc.

3-      Wear covered clothes to avoid mosquito bite.

4-      Use mosquito repellent lotions / sprays.

5-      Such mosquitoes usually bite during the day. So ensure you are even careful during the day time.

6-      Avoid going to areas which are more mosquito prone like behind the curtains, gardens etc.

7-      Use mosquito nets during the nights as well as days specially if small kids are sleeping during the day.

Treatment of Chikungunya

1-      If you have any of the above symptoms, definitely go and see a doctor. Don’t avoid your condition.

2-      Get your blood test done.

3-      If Chikungunya is detected, doctor will treat you according to severity of your condition.

4-      Usually Pain killers and fever controlling medicines are given by the doctor.

5-      The virus goes by itself in some days.

6-      For joint pains, try using warm compress. You can also take some massage on the joints if it gives you any comfort.
