Pregnancy Myths: India
Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the time to enjoy but comes along with a lot of myths. There is no harm in listening to these myths till the time it leads to fun, however, if it affects the health of the mother and the baby, it is the right time to put a full stop. Here are a few myths which we hear in India: 1- Eating Papaya or bitter vegetables can cause miscarriage 2- Birth Timing: Birth Timing is considered a very important thing in India. Doctors are asked to note down the timing of baby’s arrival to develop his / her horoscope. During planned pregnancies like C-section, families consult 'pandits' to come up with baby’s arrival time. During my C-section, I have even noticed the doctor considering the time when he will do the surgery. 3- Baby’s Sex: People love to predict the sex of your baby. If you are holding the baby upwards, it’s a boy and if the baby is lower – it’s a girl. If the women is putting on too much weight, it’s a girl otherwise it’s a boy. Enjoy the stories though there is nothing like this which can predict the sex of your baby. Just warning for those who end up taking treatments from gurus and all in desire of getting a boy – these things do not work and ensure it does not harm your unborn baby. 4- Avoid sex – If you have a healthy pregnancy, there is no risk to have sex. Just ensure to not put too much pressure on the stomach. 5- If you face heartburn, means good baby hair – Heartburn has nothing to do with baby hair. It is a common problem which most of the pregnant ladies suffer from. 6- Now you have to eat for two – Eat as per your appetite which might increase due to pregnancy, however, you don’t have to eat for two. 7- First delivery is always late – Your delivery depends upon your menstrual cycle. If your cycle is below 28 days – delivery can happen early and if it is more than 28 days, you tend to deliver near your due date. 8- Lady should not use any sharp objects during eclipse and should not go out in eclipse. Some people even extend it further to not to eat during eclipse – Direct contact during eclipse is harmful for any normal person since the rays are direct, however, it has no special affects on the pregnant women or her baby. Since your elders are telling you to follow these rules, follow till there is no issues. Not eating during eclipse and eclipse is for longer hrs, then you might consider eating. 9- Have dairy products to make your baby fair – Baby’s complexion has nothing to do with dairy products. If you eat healthy, definitely it helps in the proper development of the baby but has nothing to do with the skin color. 10- If you lift your arms higher, the umbilical cord will wrap around the baby’s neck – You body movement has nothing to do with umbilical cord movement. Some baby’s are born with umbilical cord around their neck but that happens due to the baby’s movement in the mother’s womb. 11- Eating a lot of ghee or butter can help in normal delivery – Ghee and butter has no role to play during the delivery of your baby. Infact it can lead to only weight gain of the mother which can create complications at the time of delivery. Ghee / butter should only be consumed in the right quantity like any other food but excess can be harmful.
