A root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to save or repair a badly infected or damaged tooth.

The tooth has two anatomical parts – crown and the root. Crown is a part of the tooth that is covered with enamel and it is part that is visible in the mouth. Root is the part that is embedded in the jaw. A tooth may have one or more roots. A tooth is consisted of hard and soft tissues. They are enamel, dentin, cementum and dental pulp. An enamel is a hardest substance and it covers the tooth. Dentin which forms the highest portion of tooth is the layer under the enamel. Cementum is a hard tissue that covers the root of the tooth. A dental pulp in the centre of the tooth is a soft connective tissue that contains blood vessels and nerves.

A root canal treatment is needed when the pulp is infected or injured. It is a process of removing the infected pulp from the root canal system, cleaning it and shaping it by filling and sealing.
